Signs that someone is mentally tough, according to psychology

Mental toughness is a concept from positive psychology that is all about having the ability to bounce back after difficult things or setbacks. And it’s also a larger mindset. It’s used a lot by athletes, military personnel, high-level business people, and their coaches and therapists. But it’s something that we can all benefit from knowing more about.

Moreover, it does not only reflect an effective coping mechanism as a reaction to stressors (e.g., reappraising stressful situations as opportunities for self-development) but also allows individuals to proactively seek out opportunities for personal growth due to high levels of confidence in one’s abilities.

Some signs that someone is mentally tough:


▶ Perseverance & the ability to not give up when obstacles
Strong determination and focus-goal attitude.

▶ Problem-solve attitude and Bounce-Backed resilience.
Think of those athletes and how many times they fail to beat their best time or performance. A sign of resilient toughness in action.

▶ The ability to see the thing as a learning experience and an opportunity to grow.
Avoid overthinking which may lead to paranoia, chaos, self-doubt, and stubbornness. If we don’t do this then failures can knock us down, resulting in negative voices that will get in the way of future performance.

▶ Reframe pain as enjoyable
It is more about the way we choose to view the things, that "happen for us" instead of "happen to us". People with mental toughness are “comfortable in their skin, can take whatever comes along in their stride and mostly enjoy the challenge”.
"Bouncing back" is just one part of resilience. Taking control of negative thought patterns and then learning to enjoy the experience is another huge part of the puzzle of mental strength. Another Pro for the use of the cognitive-behavioral approach.
